Chapter 2008 Board of Directors
Food For Thought Luncheon
AIA Saint Paul announces the first in the 2008 series of Food For Thought Luncheons on Thursday, May 8 from 11:30am – 1:00pm. Saint Paul City Council President Lantry will describe an exciting pilot project, serving as a model for turning around our neighborhoods that are threatened by foreclosures and vacant properties. Find out more and RSVP today.
Unauthorized Design
The formal Unauthorized Design Event has been postponed from the originally scheduled March 29 date. The site is now the Xcel Coal Burning Plant and based on a March meeting with interested community members, this site offers much exploration regarding the preservation and development of the Mississippi Rivers edge. There will be a late spring/ early summer revised date to allow for outdoor activities and exploration.
Unauthorized Design gives the profession an opportunity to influence public debate about what to build. This is our opportunity to showcase the talents of architects by being seen in public creating and re-creating solutions for people who generally have little idea how design happens. At the end of the day we’ll have an opportunity for interactive discussions. There are no age or experience requirements. Teams must include at least one AIA Minnesota member from any chapter. Offices have used Unauthorized Design to build team spirit and friends have re-connected through the charrette. A flyer will be sent to AIA Minnesota members with additional information. Please Contact Dan Zutter at DZutter@DLRGroup.com to sign up or for additional information.

Take Me To Your Leader…
The AIA Saint Paul has leadership opportunities available next year. If you want to spark up your resume’ and join a great group of people planning the events for architects, consider becoming a candidate. Or, if you know someone fun who is an architect either living or working in Saint Paul, please consider nominating them. Elections will occur at the Annual Meeting.
2007 Unauthorized Design Charrette
The AIA Saint Paul held a successful Unauthorized Design Charrette on the Ford Motor Company site on Saturday, March 10, 2007. There were at least 37 participants, and more who assisted throughout the day. As this location has a regional effect, it was fitting there were representatives from firms on both sides of the river. There were a number of common themes, including connections to the LRT, reuse of the historic Albert Kahn industrial building, and a mixed use on site, including residential, commercial, office, industrial, and educational. Saint Paul's Mayor, Chris Coleman, joined us for over an hour for pin-ups. He shared his enthusiasm for the day's efforts and the potential on this site. Thank you to all of the participants - it was truly an inspiring event to see all the ideas generated in under 6 hours.

St. Paul Prize Design Competition
The 2006 competition program included the design of a mixed-use building(s) as part of an urban renewal effort for Kutzky Park, one of the historic central core neighborhoods in Rochester, MN. Winning entries included Jessica Vogel, Assoc. AIA, Ellerbe Becket and Jennifer Graham-Charnewski, Assoc. AIA, Julie Snow Architects. Vogel solved the problem in a very context appropriate way while masterfully incorporating sustainable design practices to the entire site, including the use of green roofs while Graham-Charnewski responded to the program requirements with a very modern design that very tastefully incorporated the mixed uses while making it’s own design statement as a response to the eclectic site and “neighborhood context.” Read more.
