Intern Development Program (IDP)                     Return to Committees Page

Co-chairs: Meg Parsons, AIA and Rachel Riopel, Assoc. AIA
Meeting Date: noon at AIA MN office, 1st Thursday of the month

The AIA Minnesota IDP Committee is co-chaired by a registered architect and an intern. Together they are responsible for educating the profession and prospective architects about the current requirements for becoming a licensed architect in the state of Minnesota. Completion of IDP (Intern Development Program) is required before taking the ARE (Architect Registration Exam). To educate candidates, the committee:
  • Makes lunch time presentations to interns, mentors, and firm principals about the IDP process and the ARE.
  • Makes presentations to architecture students to introduce the concept of IDP and inform them of the MN state licensing requirements for architects.
  • Presents ARE review seminars throughout the year to aid candidates in preparing for the exam.
  • Interfaces with NCARB and the AIA National Office to influence future policy.
ARE Seminar schedules are automatically mailed to all AIA members. If you are not an AIA member, call the AIA MN office (612) 338-6763 and ask to have your name added to the ARE/IDP mailing list. Current seminars being offered can be viewed at Continuing Education.

To request a firm visit or a student presentation, email one of the co-chairs or Deanna Christiansen.

NCARB Launches Online Application for NCARB Record
The process to start an NCARB Record just got easier. Interns and architects can now fill out the Application for an NCARB Record to pursue Certification or to begin the Intern Development Program (IDP) online. The new online application will cut the time it takes to establish an NCARB Record down to one week or less. Submitting a paper application is a four-week process. The electronic version of the Application is the first step in changing how NCARB processes and maintains Records for interns and architects. NCARB is already hard at work preparing other forms so they may be completed online to further cut down on process and evaluation times. See www.ncarb.org/forms/index.html

A Call for IDP Auxiliary Coordinators
Is a part of your responsibilities in your firm coordinating activities that support those in the Intern Development Program? Do you wish you had an easy way to access the most up-to-date changes and national happenings for IDP? Do you ever wish you could bounce ideas or ask questions of those in other firms to see how they support the interns within their office? If so, we invite you to become an IDP Auxiliary Coordinator. This position does not require you to do more than you are already doing with your firm. It does offer opportunities for you to expand your knowledge of IDP and be plugged in to the AIA network of Coordinators. View the Position Details (PDF)
