In the News:
Historic Tax Credit Legislation Update 2007
Once again Minnesota’s Legislators will be introducing a state historic structure and community re-investment tax credit. The tax credit would allow a taxpayer incurring certain qualifying costs for the rehabilitation of eligible property to take a credit against his or her state income tax equal to 25 percent of the total qualifying costs of rehabilitation. Although we were not able to prevail this year, progress was made. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to contact legislators! The coalition of groups working to pass this legislation will continue this pursuit. There may be discussions, events, and other opportunities to become involved in the effort this fall and again next session. We will keep you posted as they arise. Please continue to talk to people, legislators, local public officials, business associations, building owners and neighbors about this important community and economic development tool. Thanks again for your interest and effort!

Financing Historic Preservation
There are many programs set up to help fund historic preservation efforts. If you’re restoring a building or just want to know what types of loans, grants and tax credits are out there, you should know about . . .
National Trust Small Deal Fund (SDF)
The National Trust Community Investment Corporation, in partnership with Tax Credit Capital, LLC, now offers the National Trust Small Deal Fund (SDF), a program to invest in small historic tax credit projects, which are often passed over by equity syndicators because they are comparatively high-cost. All types of properties, including housing, retail, office and mixed-use, are eligible for SDF, which operates in all 50 states. For more information, including details on project eligibility, visit www.ntcicfunds.com
The Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credit (RTC)
The RTC offers federal tax credits to historic property owners, creating a dollar-for-dollar reduction in owed federal taxes. A comprehensive guide to this program, including eligibility requirements, can be found on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's web site.
Minnesota’s "This Old House" Program
This program provides a break on property taxes for many homes over 45 years old. Specifically, improvements on qualifying houses that add at least $5,000 to the value of the property are not included in the property's value for tax purposes.
