Impacts from extreme precipitation, the urban heat island effect, extended heat waves, stronger wind storms, and more frequent ice storms and freeze/thaw cycles are beginning to affect buildings, their occupants, the surrounding landscape, and related public infrastructure. How do we thrive in a rapidly changing and more challenging world?

2. Explain the boundaries and focus of the emerging area of resilient design.
3. Describe the newly developed RELi Resiliency Action List for Communities, Neighborhoods + Buildings.
4. Explain the economic rational and incentives for applying resilient design to projects.

Douglas Pierce, AIA, is a Senior Associate with Perkins+Will in Minneapolis and a member of the AREA Research Board Steering Committee. He is a LEED Fellow and has over 25 years of experience in sustainable design and planning.
