The 74th annual AIA Minnesota Convention took place Tuesday, November 11 – Friday, November 14, 2008, at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Over two thousand people attended – 1,600 attending programs and the exhibitions, while another 500 visited the exhibit hall, which hosted over 250 companies as well as a variety of exhibits. The programs, centered around the theme Voices with Vision, encouraged architects to envision the future and carry a voice by leading the discussion and shaping responses to global change.
The collective voices as architects are both diverse and visionary and can lead to progressive solutions on issues that are wide open for exploration. In architects’ pursuit to lead communities and collaborate with design-related professionals in unconventional ways, it is good to have a questioning approach. Architects want to shape the emerging information management tools of the industry; lead the discussion to develop new cross-disciplinary models, and play a central role in the solutions to the challenges of youth, diversity and education in our profession.
This year’s Convention offered more continuing education seminars than any other year. Forty-nine programs and five keynote addresses covering issues including building green infrastructure, geothermal energy, senior housing, designing workspaces for up to four generations, solar homes, neighborhood revitalizations and a vision for light rail.

New Convention & Membership Scholarship For Emerging Professionals and Students
AIA Minnesota is particularly enriched when young professionals become members and participate; however many people just starting out their careers find the costs of membership dues and certain opportunities prohibitive. Critical networking events, like the annual state Convention, are often missed as well due to the cost of registration, time away from work, and for some, travel costs. In response, AIA Minnesota has created a scholarship to support young professionals who otherwise may not be able to join the organization and participate. Eligible applicants include Emerging Professionals and Students who are: architects who have been licensed less than five years, IDP interns, and current students pursuing professional degrees in architecture. See the application and submission instructions (PDF)
2007 Convention
Tomorrow is Today
The theme of the 2007 AIA Minnesota Convention, Tomorrow is Today, focused on the architecture of today as the precipice of starting tomorrow's revolution – a revolution in how we think about living. Driven by changes in climate, finite resources, global economics and evolving technology, architecture will influence the way industry, business, and residents fit into their environments. Throughout the 73rd Annual Convention, we were challenged by our programs and exhibitors to think about how our decisions and the tools and materials that we use today affects how buildings will be constructed and frame the way we will live tomorrow.

2006 Annual Convention

In The Mix
72nd AIA Minnesota Convention and Products Exposition
November 14 - 17, 2006
Minneapolis Convention Center
This year’s convention theme, In the Mix, inspired attendees to consider how our communities, and the world at large, may change if architects are increasingly “In the Mix.” How will this impact the profession? The Convention addressed several AIA Minnesota initiatives including encouraging architects to become more engaged in the external community; creating more livable communities through architects taking a leadership role in sustainable design; and exploring the role of the architect in the future.
