2005 Home of the Month Selections

AIA Minnesota is pleased to partner with Minneapolis's StarTribune newspaper to celebrate the third annual Home of the Month program. Twelve entries were selected from 45 high-quality submissions and will be featured in the newspaper's "Homes" section, appearing the first Saturday of every month beginning in May.

The purpose of the competition is to:
  • educate and inspire the public about the value architects bring to home-building;
  • support ideas of what a Minnesota or Wisconsin home can be;
  • expand understanding of the many housing choices for potential homeowners;
  • represent a diversity of price-range for architecturally designed homes;
  • and support a growing residential architectural community.

The jury gathered on March 19, and included David Arkin, AIA, principal of Arkin Tilt Architects, Berkeley, CA; Bill Blanski, AIA, Vice President at Hammel, Green and Abrahamson and Mark Wentzell, AIA, principal, Ankeny Kell Architects.

Following are the 2005 Home of the Month projects selections with jury comments:

A Bold Palette for Living
Mark Gunstad, AIA, Friedell Architects & Builders
“Awesome color! Let's have a party at this house—it's so playful, like walking through a Mozart concerto - it's a sustained high note. The home really fits the clients.”

Anderson Transformation
Mark Larson, AIA and Jean Rehkamp Larson, AIA, Rehkamp Larson Architects
“Modest, a good story. I appreciate this home's calmness - how it stays small and within a reasonable budget. It fits well in its neighborhood.”

Family Living
Todd Hansen, AIA, Albertsson Hansen Architecture
“A great story. I highly respect that the architect didn't add a single square foot and creatively met all of the owners needs. The resulting remodel is what this home should have been in the first place.”

Freeman Residence
Wayne Branum, AIA, SALA Architects
“Cool, affordable—it's clearly a winner. Great site. The design appreciates simplicity. Built at $100 per square foot, it's really an accomplishment.”

Hamilton/Jelle Residence
Kelly Davis, AIA, SALA Architects
“Small, clean and solar, I like it. This project has the most excellent scheme of all. It's logical, straightforward and honest, yet still splendid. This home shows how livable a passive solar home can be.”

Madeline Island Cottage
Michaela Mahady, AIA, SALA Architects
“Beautiful and well-thought out, a strong use of color. This home is 3,000 square feet, but done in a humble way. It's charming.”

New Carriage House on Lake Superior
Dan Nepp, AIA, TEA2 Architects
“Over the top and masterfully done. It shows craftsmanship and tradition of an exquisite nature.”

Northenscold "Big Bang"
Robert Gerloff, AIA, Robert Gerloff ResidentialArchitects
“This standard non-descript urban rambler transformation demonstrates why youshould hire an architect. It shows how successful subtlety can be.”

Ranch Home Remodel
Ali Awad, AIA, Awad & Koontz
“Great revitalization! For spending a reasonable amount, the home got what it deserved and more. It proves every home has the potential to become better.”

St. Paul Kitchen Remodel & Addition
Richard Lundin, AIA, 3studios
“Simple and bold. It's okay to have fun in your backyard. It's a refreshing addition that rescues a home potentially headed for doom.”

Superior Split
Dale Mulfinger, SALA Architects
“Very consistent in itself. Good lines. I love the warmth of the interior. It's a home that's relaxed and doesn't take itself seriously. It feels appropriate to Lake Superior.”

Tri-Wing
Eric Odor, AIA, SALA Architects
“It does it all well. Nice open plan. Well-knit into its site. This home proves good design and sustainable design are not mutually exclusive.”
