2013 Energy Expo Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013 All Day Event will run 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM "Sustaining Together" at The River Center located at 175 West Kellogg Blvd, Saint Paul MN 55102 (http://www.rivercentre.org/) This year we have selected a beautiful venue, centrally located in Saint Paul. In response to feedback from last year’s event, we have decided to put an emphasis on vendor inclusion. Vendor exhibitions will be located around the perimeter of the Grand Ballroom, encompassing the dining tables used for breakfast and lunch. In addition, three large meeting rooms outside of the ballroom will be utilize throughout the day for programming. The selected theme this year is “Sustaining Together". TECHNICAL PRESENTATIONS Featuring ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Daniel Nall of Thornton Tomasetti in New York City. Daniel Nall is both a registered architect and a licensed engineer and will be giving two separate technical presentations: -- Innovative Systems for Energy and Water Conservation: Four Corporate Headquarters --ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guides These two presentations are part of the four different technical tracts from 9 AM to 2 PM with the following focuses: Facility Managers, Building Owners, Existing Buildings, and Building Design. The presentations and invited speakers include: Minnesota’s Utility Conservation Programs: Past, Present, Future by Joe Plummer of the Minnesota Department of Commerce Division of Energy Resources Using BAS to Optimize Your Building’s Performance by Mark Peterson of the University of Minnesota O&M Training for Energy Efficiency by Garrett Mosiman of the University of Minnesota and Chris Plum of Center for Energy and Environment Energy Efficiency as an Investment by Matt Haakenstad of Navigant Consulting Panel Discussion on Organizational Energy Saving Strategies led by Stephen Todd of Building Solutions Building Automation and Recommissioning by Rebecca Ellis of Questions and Solutions Existing Building Case for Sustainability by Richard Murphy of Murphy’s Warehouse Chiller Optimization by Jeff Seewald of Sebesta Bloomberg Energy Code Changes by Andy Thielen of Crane Engineering TOURS Tours of nearby District Energy St. Paul™ and the RiverCentre’s solar thermal system will be available after 2 PM. VENDOR EXPO The vendor exposition area will be open from 7:30 to 4:00, including a 1 ½ hour lunch in the vendor exhibit area.

Tim Eian of Intep will guide the audience through his studio's latest project, the 24th Street Passive House homes in La Crosse, Wisconsin. This urban infill project demonstrates the Passive House concept and marks the beginning of new path to high-performance projects for its developer, Western Wisconsin Technical College. Both the design and construction phases serve as a laboratory for Western's education program. The built homes provide La Crosse with its first Passive Houses and support Western's mission to provide cutting edge education and meaningful community outreach. The presentation will be preceded by a short slide show outlining recent and current Passive House projects throughout the country. *This presentation will also be available via webinar. The presentation will begin at 9:00, with a light breakfast at 8:30. Attendance is free, but registration is required. Sign up here for your ticket. Paul Bertram will speak about the importance of prioritizing the energy efficiency of a building envelope. He will describe the payback resulting from this investment and how the envelope contributes to a net-energy building. He will touch on the building science behind exterior building panel efficiency and how Building Enclosure Commissioning is a growing driver behind building efficiency. This will include a discussion on building modeling that supports net-zero energy goals and a case study highlighting successes and lessons learned. In addition to outlining the energy impacts of the building envelope, Mr. Bertram will discuss Kingspan’s work to achieve its net-zero energy goals as a company. This will include steps that have been taken to move in this direction, examples of success, and challenges that the company needs to overcome. This will be relevant not only to those involved in sustainable supply chain management, but also to reducing energy usage in industrial processes. Learning objective 1: Impacts of building envelope on energy consumption Learning objective 2: Energy modeling metrics, including cost-savings Learning objective 3: Net-Zero Energy modeling research and databases from the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) Learning objective 4: Options for analytical approaches in energy modeling *This program is registered with the AIA/CES for continuing professional education.
