2005 RAVE Award Winners
Ten residential architecture projects by Minnesota architects have been selected for this year’s Residential Architects Vision and Excellence (RAVE) Awards. The program, in its second year, was created by AIA Minnesota and Mpls.St.Paul
Magazine to recognize excellence in residential design and raise awareness of the benefits of using an architect. 54 submissions were entered in different categories including new and remodeled homes, large and small sizes and budgets. The jury, which was impressed by the work, included Peter Chapman, editor at architectural book publisher, Taunton Press; Thomas Meyer, AIA, principal Meyer Scherer & Rockcastle Ltd. in Minneapolis; Howard Goltz, AIA, of Leo A. Daly and former president of AIA Minnesota; and Jayne Haugen Olson, editor at Mpls.St.Paul
Magazine.
The winners will be honored at a special banquet at Solera restaurant in downtown Minneapolis on Thursday, July 28th. The projects will also be featured in the August issue of Mpls.St.Paul
Magazine and in the AIA Minnesota office gallery.

Rural Retreat & Studio
Kelly Davis, AIA, SALA Architects
New residence, less than 2000 square feet
"The studio and storage space relate well
to each other and the landscape in the context
of their forms and this rural vernacular. From the
energy-efficiency aspect, this home succeeds in
doing it all yet still doesn't comprise a thing in
terms of materials. I like the simple, straight-forward
use of them. It feels like a retreat back to nature."

Highview Road Residence
Michael Huber, AIA, Michael Huber Architect
New residence, 2000-3,500 square feet
"The architect is really having some fun with this project—traditional farm forms like the barn and silo are recalled in this rural Wisconsin setting. It's nicely detailed, a bit funky from the outside and a very pleasing space on the inside."

Sustainable Modernist: meets Kyoto Protocol
Sarah Nettleton, AIA, Sarah Nettleton Architects
New residence, 2000-3,500 square feet
"I can envision walking through this home and feeling really good. It has great lines and a warmth about it. They took sustainability seriously and incorporated elements of day-lighting that work successfully and draw a lot of light into the spaces."

 |
Urban Lake Home
Tom Ellison, AIA, TEA2 Architects
New residence, over 3,500 square feet
"There's a lot of refinement here and quality in the details. Given its narrow lot, the architect has designed wonderful layered spaces that look from one space to the next and provide interesting views that capture the presence of the lake."

 |
Mississippi River Bluff Home
Todd Hansen, AIA, Albertsson Hansen Architecture
New residence, over 3,500 square feet
"The exterior uses simplistic and classical forms that feel comfortable while the interior spaces offer a variety of interpretations on those forms. The architect has managed to achieve such a nice sense of scale, that the 7300 square foot residence doesn't feel overwhelming, but inviting and filled with intriguing spaces."

 |
Anderson Studio/Garage
Robert Gerloff, AIA, Robert Gerloff Residential Architects
Remodeled residence, less than 800 square feet
"An exemplary addition for city living and work-life, as they become one in the same. The studio, drenched in light, is now a highly functional space that gives the artist creative freedom and reprieve from a cramped in-home studio."
|
 |
 |
Lake Cabin
Christine Albertsson, AIA, Albertsson Hansen Architecture
Remodeled residence, over 800 square feet
"The architect sensitively completed a major redo that doesn't remotely feel like a remodel. It's charming. They made great choices by opening up two bedrooms to create a new kitchen, adding a second level and a lot of light to maintain the richness of the glowing woodwork."
|
 |
 |
The Snuggery
James Stageberg, FAIA
Remodeled residence, over 800 square feet
"The original home is so finely detailed and well proportioned, then the colorful and detailed addition of a den, porch and sauna comes along and continues to tell its story. The new outdoor spaces created by these additions and landscaping would make it feel you're like taking a vacation in your own backyard."

Curtain Call
Paul Neuhaus, AIA, Perkins & Will
Delightful Detail
“This child’s space has a way of cleverly blending the old and the new to create a dramatic effect. The huge cantilever mystically hangs suspended—it’s almost as if the children are on-stage.”

 |
Icehaus
Dale Mulfinger, FAIA, SALA Architects
Delightful Detail
"It's an unexpected whimsical piece of artwork on the lake—the red roof stands out
in a stark-white winter backdrop. It's simple and fun."
