AIA Minneapolis and AIA St. Paul Announce Scholarship Winners
The AIA Minneapolis and AIA St Paul Scholarship is designated as a recruiting tool for the masters of architecture program at the University of Minnesota’s College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. The awards are given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in representation and design thinking in their undergraduate studies, whether in philosophy, physics or architecture. The CALA Graduate Admissions Committee chooses a cluster of top candidates (often 25 students) from the pool of applicants to the masters program. These candidates are selected because their application—comprised of portfolio, academic record and letters of reference—indicates the potential to contribute to the study of architecture at the University. When reviewing student portfolios, the committee measures drawing or design ability and aptitude, critical design thinking, a strong sense of graphics and the potential for design leadership in their peer group.

Each of the candidates is informed that if they choose to attend CALA, they could receive financial support in the form of a graduate fellowship, a teaching assistantship or a scholarship, such as AIA’s, or a combination of these. The students are invited to a two-day recruiting visit in early spring where faculty and students interact in studio reviews, small presentations, a tour of the Twin Cities and visits to local design firms. The AIA chapter scholarships are important incentives for the students, and recognize the commitment Minnesota's architectural community has made to the University and to attracting high-quality students to the region.

Once the Admissions Committee confirms which students will be attending in the fall, they present scholarship nominees to the chapter boards for approval. Three scholarships were given this year by the AIA Minneapolis chapter, one by the St. Paul chapter.
