A recent HomeAdvisor survey found that 61% of homeowners over age 55 plan to stay in their homes indefinitely as they age. With a growing need for home design that allows for aging in place, architects are a valuable resource, employing smart design solutions to help homeowners continue living safely and comfortably in their homes for the long term. Several projects on the 2017 Homes by Architects tour demonstrate the role of design in planning for the future.

Home #16 features single-level living plus a designated en suite living space for aging parents. Designed by CityDeskStudio, the clients also wanted their home to be a piece of architecture, so the design is characterized by strong design elements and a modern form. Sustainability was another priority; the home’s location on the lot takes advantage of existing trees and topography and sustainable materials and the potential to add home energy production were integrated as well.

Tickets to the 2017 Homes by Architects Tour are now available for purchase online. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 during the tour.
