DESIGN TEAM: Lars Peterssen, AIA; Gabriel Keller, Assoc. AIA; Chad Healy, Assoc. AIA; Ashley Peterson, Assoc. AIA
PROJECT TYPE: New Construction
When the clients found a narrow site with incredible west-facing views of Lake Calhoun, they commissioned Peterssen/Keller Architecture to replace the existing smaller, old structure with a new home. As so often happens with design projects, the couple had different architectural sensibilities: one favored traditional design while the other prefers a modern aesthetic. They agreed that the home should have a visual connection to the lake and wanted a casual, efficient, open floor plan with multiple gathering spaces.
The resulting design expertly utilized layering, scale, and natural materials to give the home a fresh, modern spirit while also relating to the neighboring homes and maintaining a connection to the street. A dramatic palette of natural materials like Fond du Lac limestone, white stained cedar, walnut cabinetry, and blackened steel shelving creates is featured throughout the home. An innovative Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), one of the first in Minneapolis, is also accommodated on this narrow urban lot.
