The architect and his wife are the owners of this small-footprint, spirit-of-summer home on Lake Minnetonka. Their dream was to create a four-season family lake home with all the economy of space, flexibility of use, and outdoor living embodied in the idea of a traditional “Minnesota lake home.”
Ash is used for both interior and exterior walls, and siding was washed for a “beach” effect. Triple-paned windows and a large, linear fireplace provide comfort during the winter months. A west facing sunroom/ four-season porch collects sunshine and is the favored ‘hang out’ spot for relaxing.
In the warmer months, floor to ceiling sliding glass doors open the home to the lake. Elevated and integrated drawing board and study room look out on the great room and frame the view, keeping the occupants connected to the outdoors as they go through their daily routine. Invisible and feature-rich home automation and perfectly placed acoustical treatments complete the usability of the spaces without drawing attention away from the architectural design.
Outdoor spaces align perfectly with the design of the home. The carport can double as a Ping-Pong court; the auto court can double as a sport court, and the yard is graded for badminton and pickleball. The property includes an outdoor bathroom and shower, and lake storage. Logs and rocks from the site were collected and arranged by the owners’ grandchildren to complete the family’s dream lake home vision.
