This home, originally designed by legendary Minnesota architect Ralph Rapson, needed an update for a modern lifestyle without expanding or substantially changing the footprint of the living space in the home. Flow was increased both inside and out, with the house now opening to a generous outdoor living area overlooking the ravine behind the home.
Much was done to stay within the original spirit of the interior, including continuing the floor and wall tiles and preserving the cabinets and original closet systems in the foyer and guest bedroom. The original and expansive central glass atrium remains as well. The architect upgraded the kitchen island and added a metal tambour door to conceal the in-kitchen bar area. Additional windows were incorporated to bring in light from multiple directions, enhancing the original round skylights seen throughout the home.
Like Rapson, the homeowners needed gallery space for displaying photography. The architect moved and realigned spaces to allow the owners to utilize the original light-scooping skylights to bring light into the galleries and the heart of the home.
