The architects were challenged to design a modern home that works on a hilly lot with mature heritage trees and blends easily into the fabric of an established Wayzata neighborhood of traditional houses.
The solution was a simple yet sophisticated combination of two traditional gable forms connected by a modern metal form and finished with cedar shakes that will gray naturally over time to blend in with the setting.
By nestling the house deep into the hill, the designers created a large, sunny front terrace for entertaining while still allowing the sun to illuminate the neighboring house to the north. There is a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces created by floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors, garden light wells, and a green roof.
The modern, highly linear open floor plan recalls an urban loft with 10-foot ceilings, a cozy sunken living room that functions as a “space within a space,” sophisticated finishes and a sleek wall of custom cabinetry that runs the length of the north wall.
