El Rancho Residence is a complete remodel and addition to a 1949 log cabin home designed to be a modern reinterpretation of the style. The “Wagon Wheel House” was originally built by the artist Martin Fowler as his family home; the new homeowners, also artists, wanted to take special care to maintain the original character and history.

A second-level addition updated the roofline to incorporate new space, which includes a master suite, a shared bathroom, a laundry, and a studio space that can be converted into two bedrooms. A new open stair connects the two levels and allows light into the center of the home.

Textures in the home are a mixture of old, new, and reimagined materials. Existing materials were salvaged and given new life. The exterior siding was carefully removed, stained, and reinstalled, maintaining the existing character with a modern feel. Many of the interior wood finishes were materials from within the existing home.

The home also includes a guest suite that allows for single-level living: a long-term, age-in-place strategy for the family that does not interfere with the preservation of the original feel of the home or the modern tone and comfort of the remodel.
