2019 Highlights

The 31st annual Lake Superior Design Retreat was held in Duluth on March 1 and 2, 2019. This unique event takes place in Duluth, Minnesota at the historic Fitger’s Inn, situated on the shore of Lake Superior. Attendees from beyond Duluth enjoy staying at the hotel and walking up to the third floor for presentations in the North Shore Theatre. One attendee wrote, “I adore the setting and facility.”

A few more than 100 attendees took part in the 31st annual Lake Superior Design Retreat from which we were able to welcome 15 first-time attendees! One new attendee said, “I was skeptical of speakers relating to my specific area of practice (engineering). Wow is all I can say.”

Speakers included an art therapist, an artist, a writer/landscape architect, an urban planner, an architect, and an aerospace and automotive engineer. The topics were diverse, and yet balanced, inspirational, and somehow all tied together.

Urban planner and architect, Jess Zimbabwe, partnered with former Duluth mayor Don Ness, to discuss the challenges and opportunities of downtown edge neighborhoods. 17 general public Duluth residents attended and were introduced to LSDR, to architecture, and to the insights presented.

Dates for 2020 have been confirmed for February 28-29.
