The 31st annual Lake Superior Design Retreat was held in Duluth on March 1 and 2, 2019. This unique event takes place in Duluth, Minnesota at the historic Fitger’s Inn, situated on the shore of Lake Superior.
Attendees from beyond Duluth enjoyed staying at the hotel and walking up to the third floor for presentations in the North Shore Theatre. One attendee wrote, “I adore the setting and facility.” Over 100 attendees took part in the 31st annual Lake Superior Design Retreat, including 15 first-time attendees! One new attendee said, “I was skeptical of the speakers relating to my specific area of practice (engineering). ‘Wow,’ is all I can say.”
Speakers included an art therapist, an artist, a writer/landscape architect, an urban planner, an architect, and an aerospace and automotive engineer. The topics were diverse yet balanced, inspirational, and all tied together.
Urban planner and architect Jess Zimbabwe partnered with former Duluth mayor Don Ness to discuss the challenges and opportunities of downtown-edge neighborhoods. Seventeen general public Duluth residents attended and were introduced to LSDR, architecture, and the insights presented.
