During the 2013 Legislative Session, Representative Atkins was the chief House author of legislation impacting the statute of repose on behalf of AIA Minnesota, the ACEC and the AGC. As Chair of the Commerce and Consumer Protection Finance and Policy Committee, Representative Atkins is involved in a number of issues important to architects, such as licensing policy. Representative Atkins serves on the Capital Investment, Energy Policy, and Ways and Means Committees. Representative Atkins is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and William Mitchell College of Law. Preservation and Change at Taliesin Workshop September 13 & 14 This year, Taliesin Preservation will present a continuing education workshop that demonstrates how to manage change through design and preservation by examining the buildings at Taliesin and discussing how change can be anticipated and incorporated. It will begin with a tour of Taliesin late Friday afternoon and continue through late afternoon on Saturday. The course includes lectures, detailed examination, and sharing of observations. This course is worth 4 AIA Learning Units, but is also open to the general public. $250 (includes reception & lunch). Registration required. DBIA-UMR will host a program entitled Design Build Environmental Management - Planning for Success, Prepared for Disaster on Wednesday, September 18 at 7:30 a.m. (registration and breakfast buffet begin at 7:15 a.m.) at at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul Campus, Rogge/Leyden Dining Room in the Anderson Student Center. Jill Mickelson, Senior Engineer, Braun Intertec is the distinguished speaker. During this informative breakfast meeting, Jill Mickelson will discuss how the Environmental Compliance Manager (ECM) is the Owner's primary environmental watchdog on a design-build project and the Environmental Manager (EM) is the Contractor's primary environmental planner. The presentation will cover the following topics: 1. Design-Build environmental management and why the EM/ECM role is essential to the design-build project. 2. The Clock is Ticking - minimizing project delays through effective planning 3. Managing the Circus - understanding regulations and managing project stakeholders 4. The View from the Trenches - being prepared for typical and atypical design-build environmental problems
