The Musicant Group
The Musicant Group is an interdisciplinary activation and placemaking firm dedicated to “creating places where people want to be.” The firm has pioneered a holistic approach to the creation of place that integrates design, events, and management systems all through the lens of the user experience. Since its founding in 2012, the firm has demonstrated that community and commercial interests all benefit from more humane, inclusive, and lively places for people. We believe that every space can and should be a great place.
We are building a new type of planning and design practice that prioritizes the human experience of place through the combination of interactive engagement, incremental design, and the ongoing care of a place. In joining us, you’ll be part of a team that’s living our values and thinking systemically.
Role Description: Design+Planning Project Manager
The Musicant Group seeks someone with a passion for public spaces, strong project management stills, and experience in planning and/or design.
This position will be part of a small team that:
Creates plans, assessments, and reports for districts and individual spaces
Crafts site and concept plans for public and common areas
Designs and executes community engagement strategies
Manages and implements demonstration projects, pilots, and installations
Assists in the creation of proposals and responses to RFPs
The position will both serve as the primary project manager for their own projects, as well as support fellow Design+Planning and Community Management+Event colleagues around their relevant efforts. Clients will include primarily public sector agencies focused on public spaces, transportation, and economic development, in addition to community organizations and commercial real estate clients.
We are looking for someone special who is excited to be part of, and help grow, an innovative and values-driven practice. Someone who has been hungry to work more holistically. Who wants to bridge the divides between planning, design, construction, operations, and end-use. Someone who is excited about the chance to build upon our organization’s foundation in order to create better services and designs to improve our world. We are looking for someone who puts people first, who values empiricism over abstract theory, and who knows that good processes lead to good outcomes.
The primary responsibilities of the position will be:
Creating and managing budgets, schedules, project plans, subcontractors and partners
Designing concept and site plans for public and common area spaces
Writing plans and reports focused on individual spaces, districts, and communities
Creating graphics for reports, site designs, wayfinding and communication purposes
Building strong client relationships and coordinating multiple partners and stakeholders
Managing tactical site improvements and small construction projects, including soliciting bids, coordinating site work, and obtaining permits
Sourcing furniture, fixtures, and equipment
Designing and conducting innovative community engagement and activation events
Participating in workshops, pilots and demonstration events
Collaborating on proposals for future projects
Qualities, Skills, and Experience
Finding someone who is a good organizational fit is a higher priority for us than having an exact skill set. That said, the more of the following skills and experiences candidates possess, the more strongly they will be considered:
Understanding of and passion for design focused on the human experience
Ability to translate ideas, concepts and information into clear and attractive graphic representations
Empathetic to the needs of others and how spaces can serve them
Strategic problem solver
Aware of the civic context that planning and design work exists within
Familiarity with leading design practitioners such as Christopher Alexander, William (Holly) Whyte, Jan Gehl, Janette Sadik-Khan, etc.
