Does your work involve interacting with cities or counties? You might now be a lobbyist
If your work involves client work, collaboration, or efforts to convince city, county, MetCouncil, or other local government officials, new rules related to lobbying may apply to you. Over the past two legislative sessions, there have been significant changes to the rules and definitions governing lobbying. AIA Minnesota worked with legislators to better clarify lobbying laws and mitigate the potential impacts on the architecture profession but some interactions with local governments may still require you to register as a lobbyist in certain circumstances.
On July 30th, 2025, Jeff Sigurdson, Executive Director of the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board, shared the updated rules and regulations to help AIA MN members understand how and when your communications with local government officials may constitute lobbying that requires registration with the board.
