Catholic Charities and the Twin Cities Housing Crisis

Across the Twin Cities—and across Minnesota—increasing rents, stagnant wages and a lack of affordable housing have contributed to a housing and homelessness crisis. In 2019, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis opened Dorothy Day Place, a two-building campus in downtown Saint Paul which offers emergency shelter, permanent homes and pathways out of poverty. Featuring innovative design features, Dorothy Day Place offers a new way to address homelessness, moving from crisis management to a proven model that links emergency services with direct resources on site that can help prevent homelessness and lead to stability and opportunity.

At this session, we’ll hear from experts on homelessness trends and what is being done to address the crisis. We’ll also learn about the functional components and design of the Dorothy Day Place campus.  Catholic Charities staff will share day-in-the-life experiences of the residents and guests who access the campus every day.
