High Performance Masonry: Meeting Insulation Choices, Options and Requirements for Masonry Buildings
Envelope performance continues to be a topic of importance for the designer looking to find the best methods to balance a building’s energy usage. As systems are analyzed to address the reduction of internal loads, the design of the building envelope should be incorporated as part of the building’s strategy for energy conservation. While there are many components impacting energy conservation in the envelope, it appears that insulation has moved to the center of the conversation. This seminar will focus on the connections between sustainability and high performance masonry walls, specifically looking at ASHRAE 90.1 and today’s insulation requirements for building envelopes. We will discuss how masonry MORE than meets industry standards as well as how thermal mass contributions from masonry help to enhance the whole building performance.
1. Review whole wall concept for integrated envelope performance.
2. Assess insulation requirements as set by ASHRAE 90.1.
3. Evaluate insulation choices.
4. Examine “must-do” details as related to cavity wall components including insulation.

What Non-Engineers Need to Know About Structural MasonryThis seminar is for architects, designers, contractors and building owners who would like to be more knowledgeable about typical and not-so-typical structural masonry applications. You will learn basic structural masonry concepts, current structural masonry design methods, review case studies and gain a better understanding of structural masonry attributes and how engineers tend to think about masonry. This seminar presents overall concepts of structural masonry to be used in the conceptual phase of a project. If you desire to use tall thin wall profiles or produce economical and aesthetically pleasing masonry designs for your next project, then this is a good seminar for you. At a minimum we will teach you how to spot a masonry design that may be over-designed or where the masonry is being under-utilized. You will also learn how to potentially save money by using structural masonry in foundations, load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls, shear walls, perforated shear walls, shaft walls and fire walls.

Mark Swanson, AIA, CSI, LEED AP BD+C, is the Minnesota Area Director of the International Masonry Institute. In this role, Mark provides technical consultations, plan reviews, jobsite troubleshooting and AIA continuing education seminar presentations to the design community. Mark is involved with the National BIM for Masonry workgroup working to raise the bar for Building Information Modeling concerning masonry. He has lectured at Georgia Tech’s digital design laboratory and is an Adjunct Professor at the University Of Minnesota College Of Design’s School of Architecture. Mark is also a mentor with the ACE Mentor program working to promote careers in architecture, construction and engineering to high school students.
Sam Rubenzer, PE, SE, founded FORSE Consulting in January 2010 and has been assisting other structural engineers on a wide variety of designs with an assortment of structural engineering design software. He and his staff have worked hard to learn each of the software programs used by structural engineers, and have created many presentations comparing the attributes of different software tools. With this knowledge, Sam has been a speaker at NCSEA, NASCC, and many other SEA and ASCE events across the country.
