How did your firm get started? How long ago?
Architecture Advantage opened its doors in Duluth, Minnesota on November 1, 2005, and is now proudly celebrating its 20th year in practice. Founded by Melissa Graftaas and her mentor, Raymond Blesener, the firm grew out of their shared experience at BDP Architects and a mutual passion for thoughtful client-centered design and service. In 2018, the firm expanded its reach with the acquisition of RRTL Architects in St. Paul, adding a rich legacy of more than 60 years of design excellence to the Architecture Advantage team.
What do you think your firm is best known for?
We are best known for being authentic in how we listen, collaborate and deliver; accessible in how we remain present and responsive; and advocates in how we elevate our clients and community, grounded in equity and purpose.
What’s a client comment that sticks with you?
‘The team really cared about the task at hand and took the time to get to know the story of the space.’
What do architects bring to built projects?
By listening carefully to clients and communities, architects translate goals and values into thoughtful, high-performing environments that balance function, beauty, and long-term impact. Architects also advocate for collaboration, equity, and quality throughout the process to ensure the built outcome truly serves the people who use it.
What if someone has never worked with an architect/architecture firm before? What can they expect?
When working with our team, clients can expect a collaborative process centered on listening, discovery, and problem-solving. We work closely with them to understand their goals, budget, and vision, and together translate those ideas into thoughtful design solutions. We truly enjoy the process alongside our clients—helping navigate complex decisions, ensuring the right voices are at the table throughout the design process, including those that are traditionally underrepresented, and advocating for their goals. This approach allows us to deliver built outcomes that support their needs today and well into the future.
At its essence, what is your firm’s approach?
By empowering every voice, we transform our clients’ visions into integrated, human-centered design solutions.
