Real-world take: Value of Licensure

To become an architect in Minnesota, you must satisfy three, significant requirements:

  • Education requirement, a NAAB Accredited Professional Degree (B.Arch or M.Arch)
  • Experience requirement, through the Architectural Experience Program (AXP)
  • Examination requirement, the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).

And to retain your license, you commit to career-long learning. Continuing Education (CE) credits are required by both state licensing boards (in Minnesota, the Board of AELSLAGID) and the AIA (to retain the AIA designation).

Education Requirement: NAAB-accredited degree

The Dunwoody College of Technology B.Arch and the University of Minnesota M.Arch are the only degree programs in Minnesota that directly meet the education requirement to become a licensed architect in the state of Minnesota. These schools also offer multiple architecture-related degrees, which can be pre-cursors to NAAB-accredited degrees.

Experience Requirement: AXP

The Architectural Experience Program (AXP) identifies the comprehensive experience that is essential for the independent practice of architecture. The program includes 96 tasks that are typically performed in six experience areas. Individuals can potentially begin to earn AXP experience after graduating from high school.

Retaining Licensure

Presentations on AXP/ARE for firms, schools, and student groups

The Architect Licensing Advisory (ALA) Committee makes presentations to students, licensing candidates, and mentors. The presentations provide an overview of the AXP process and getting the most out of ARE experience hours.

AIA Minnesota has proposed alternative paths to licensure

This proposal includes recommendations related to the education requirement and reciprocity for those licensed in other states. The Minnesota Board of AELSLAGID has the authority to consider and act upon these recommendations. 2027 action is possible.
