The AIA Minnesota Committee on the Environment will be touring Camp Teko on May 28. The tour will be looking at the newly completed Phase I and II of the project including new buildings and additions. The client wanted to transform this historic early 20th-century Boy Scout Tonkawa Camp — nestled within forested acreage along Lake Minnetonka — into a vibrant hub for community gatherings, youth summer programs, and spiritual experiences. They engaged the architects to reimagine the campus to support their growing camper population and evolving programmatic needs.

The tour will be led by Locus Architecture and Urban Ecosystems and will review the environmental performance including passive summer cooling via large, opposing openings capturing prevailing breezes; recognizing how the building can be sealed during extreme heat or poor air quality (e.g. wildfire smoke); and the geothermal heat pump and thermal mass (floor slab) which provides year-round climate resilience during periods of heavy use.

Tour leaders include:
  • Architect Wynne Yelland, AIA and Phil Hofstad – Locus Architecture
  • Owner reps from Temple Israel
  • Landscape architect, Michael Keenan, Urban Ecosystems
  • Mark Matasovsky of Matcom – the main point of contact throughout the entire project as the owner’s rep and property manager
