We design AIA Minnesota's most unconventional gathering

The Lake Superior Design Retreat (LSDR) is a unique event held each winter in Duluth, Minnesota. Leading up to LSDR, we engage in a yearlong process of discovery, sparking cross-disciplinary dialogue and connecting with people doing inspiring work in Minnesota and beyond.

This is an interdisciplinary committee; AIA members, architecture students, and past LSDR attendees and speakers are welcome to join us at any time during the year.

Committee Activities

In addition to deep involvement in planning all aspects of the retreat experience—logistics, sponsor recruitment, publicity, and regular event evaluation—committee members also take on these activities throughout the year.

Join us!

Find and invite speakers

Committee members brainstorm and invite potential speakers who represent an array of disciplines, developing a program of diverse, complementary topics and perspectives.

Develop tours

LSDR regularly involves tours of built spaces. Committee members identify possibilities, conduct outreach, and co-create the tour experience.

Develop workshops

One of the aspects of LSDR that participants most look forward to is the hands-on experiences, often presented by a speaker, in collaboration with the committee.

Film selection

Films are shown as an alternative to the workshop and tour at LSDR. A wide range of topics have been explored over the years. Committee members work on their own and with speakers to identify possibilities.
