Celebrating exceptional built projects designed by AIA Minnesota members who practice professionally in Minnesota.

Since 1954, AIA Minnesota has recognized outstanding architecture and urban design through its annual Honor Awards Program. We invite firms to submit their best recent work for consideration for an AIA Minnesota Honor Award.

The Honor Awards program celebrates exceptional built projects designed by AIA Minnesota members—or by firms owned by AIA Minnesota members. We encourage participation from firms of all sizes and from both emerging and established practitioners.

The submission window for the 2026 AIA Minnesota Honor Awards will open August 3, 2026, and close September 25 at 12:00 noon CST.

Eligibility

Projects must meet the following requirements, regardless of budget, style, or type. Projects that have previously received an AIA Minnesota Honor Award are not eligible for resubmission.

Eligible projects must:

  • Have been completed within the past seven years. Incomplete Urban Design and Master Planning projects may be submitted if a significant portion has been completed.
  • Have been designed by an AIA Minnesota member at the AIA or Associate level, or by a firm owned by an AIA Minnesota member at the AIA or Associate level.
  • Have been designed by an AIA member practicing in accordance with Minnesota architectural registration laws and in compliance with federal wage and labor laws, including not employing unpaid intern architects.
  • Have been designed in Minnesota by AIA Minnesota members. For projects involving multiple offices, the majority of the design work must have been completed in Minnesota.

Selection Criteria

In alignment with AIA National Architecture Awards, submissions are evaluated using the AIA Framework for Design Excellence. Design excellence requires a holistic approach that recognizes the interdependence of people, buildings, infrastructure, and the environment. The Framework’s 10 measures guide jurors in evaluating projects.

Each submission must address at least two Framework measures in the PDF image book, describing how the project performs in those areas and including relevant narratives and metrics where applicable. Projects demonstrating excellence in two or more measures may receive an Honor Award.

Jurors are encouraged—but not required—to recognize work within the following categories:

  • Architecture
  • Interiors
  • Renovation and Restoration
  • Urban Design and Master Planning
  • Small Projects

PDF Image Book Requirements

Submissions must adhere strictly to the following requirements.

Format

  • Submit one PDF image book file.
  • Maximum length: 25 vertically oriented 8.5″ x 11″ pages (1 cover + 24 additional pages).
  • Layouts may be designed as two-page spreads with images spanning both pages.
    • Spreads must be 17″ x 11″.
    • Each spread counts as two of the 25 allowed pages.
    • To ensure jurors view spreads correctly, submissions must use a vertically oriented 8.5″ x 11″ cover plus 12 spreads (17″ x 11″).

Content

Each submission must include:

  • A clear and concise project description.
  • An explanation of the original design intent and distinguishing features.
  • Information about the project scope, concept, and quality.
  • Sufficient images and plans to fully describe the project.

Cover Page

Page 1 (cover) must include:

  • Project name
  • Project location
  • Black, 48-point text
  • White background
  • One-inch margins on all sides

Images may be included on the cover page. Remaining pages may use any type size, color, background, or margins.

File Size

  • The PDF must not exceed 10 MB.
  • Reduce image sizes before placing them in the image book to meet this requirement.
Anonymity Requirement

Entrants are responsible for ensuring that the architecture firm’s name does not appear in the PDF image book or the Common App submission. Failure to comply will result in automatic disqualification.

Common App Requirement

All entrants must complete the Common Application for Design Awards (Common App) for each submission in addition to submitting the PDF awards booklet. For questions about the Common App, entrants may:

  • View the recording of the 2023 Honor Awards Open House, which walked attendees through the Common App, or
  • Contact Committee on Design staff liaison Chris Hudson.
