The AIA Minnesota Young Architect Award recognizes individuals in the early stages of their architecture careers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to both the profession and the broader community.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates are AIA Minnesota members who have been licensed to practice architecture for fewer than 10 years and who are currently licensed in Minnesota.

Note: The term “young architect” refers to years of professional experience, not age.

Selection Criteria

Submissions should demonstrate outstanding architectural achievement, leadership, and meaningful community impact. Selection criteria include, but are not limited to, excellence in the following areas:

  • Design: Creation of buildings and environments that enhance the built community
  • Practice: Leadership, management, and/or specialized technical expertise
  • Education: Teaching, publications, and/or research
  • Service: Exemplary professional service and contributions to the profession and society

Young Architect Award Process & Past Recipients

Submission Requirements
There is no entry fee. All materials must be submitted as a single PDF, not to exceed 10MB and 22 pages total, including:

  • Nomination Letter (maximum one page): Submitted by an AIA member on the candidate’s behalf, clearly outlining the candidate’s qualifications for the award.
  • Candidate Biography (maximum two pages): Includes a 25–35 word summary statement and a list of offices, positions, honors, publications, and presentations relevant to the award.
  • Summary of Accomplishments (maximum two pages): A personal narrative illustrating how the candidate’s work has advanced design, practice, or education; strengthened the profession through active engagement; and benefited the community through volunteer efforts.
  • Leadership Credentials (maximum one page): Documentation of the candidate’s leadership and involvement in AIA and/or other organizations, including evidence of influence on the profession.
  • Exhibits (maximum 12 pages): Images, drawings, and other materials demonstrating the candidate’s accomplishments. For each exhibit, the candidate must identify their level of responsibility and include a Declaration of Responsibility*, such as:
    • Largely responsible for the design
    • Member of the design team
    • Candidate’s firm executed the design
    • Project architect
    • Other (explanation required)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (maximum one page each): Written on company letterhead, signed, and explicitly recommending the candidate with specific reasons for support. The nomination letter does not count as a recommendation.


*Each exhibit must include certification from an individual—other than the candidate—with full knowledge of the project, verifying the candidate’s role. Additional details on certification format are available in Award Force.

June: Jury

July: Recipients and unsuccessful candidates informed of selections

August: Recipients honored at the AIA Minnesota Summer Awards Celebration

  • One AIA Fellow
  • Two additional AIA member leaders
