For 22 years, the Home of the Month program brought architect-designed homes to thousands of people across the state.
From 2003 to 2025, this collaboration between AIA Minnesota and the Minnesota Star Tribune featured a new home located in Minnesota or western Wisconsin and designed by an AIA Minnesota-member registered architect each month in the paper’s Sunday Homes & Garden section and online.
Each year, 12 homes would be selected out of approximately 40 submissions by a jury composed of architects, journalists, and other professionals in the residential design community. Homes would be chosen not just for their high-quality design, but also to showcase a variety of aesthetic styles, project types, and—perhaps most importantly—personal stories.
In addition to the monthly feature articles, a celebratory event kicking off the new “season” would feature a panel of three architect–client pairs, sharing their collaborative process bringing their custom dream homes to life, in addition to announcing the 12 selected homes. This event, which often sold out, was hosted at institutions such as the American Swedish Institute, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and Glasshouse, and brought together an audience of 100 to 250 industry professionals and members of the public interested in residential design. Beginning in 2020, all attendees would receive a printed Look Book featuring all submissions for that year.
As part of the Home of the Month event, members of the public could also sign up for one-on-one consultations with architects and architectural designers to discuss their own home design projects and get expert advice.
